League Tennis
Wharfedale League
For the summer 2023 season we entered two teams in the Wharfedale League. The A team captained by Marco Frik play in the second division; the B team captained by Graeme Mutch play in the third division. We had hoped to enter a third, C team, in the fourth division but unfortunately injuries etc mean we have a limited number of league team players this year so reluctantly we decided to stick to two teams. Hopefully with new members joining or coming through our coaching programme we will be able to return to three team status next year. For the Wharfedale League teams consist of three mixed pairs and matches usually involve each couple playing two sets against their equivalent pair and one set each against the other two. Bradford and District Tennis Association
Our ladies play in the top division of the Bradford and District Tennis Association league. Matches consist of two pairs each playing two sets against their respective opponents. They are usually played on Saturday afternoons. Beccy Bullock captains this team.
Lancaster, Morecambe and District Winter Veterans League
We now have three teams in this winter vets league. The Austwick Curlews play in Division 1 and the Austwick Cuckoos and Austwick Chiffchaffs in Division 2. Matches are played on weekday afternoons from October to December and January to March. The Chiffchaffs home games take place on Monday afternoons starting at 1pm, the Cuckoos on Tuesday afternoons at the same time and the Curlews on Wednesday afternoon also starting at 1pm. Matches feature two couples playing two sets against each of their opponents, whilst ideally these are mixed double matches, teams can consist of either all men, all women or a mixture, with a handicap system applied where men outnumber women. Jo Lowery is the organiser for the Curlews Graeme Mutch for the Cuckoos and Mike Smith for the Chiffchaffs.
